Why Brunswick, GA Is Called the Shrimp Capital

Brunswick Shrimp T-Shirt close-up

Ask anyone in Brunswick, Georgia, and they'll tell you: this is the Shrimp Capital of the World. It's a nickname the town has carried proudly for a long time, and it comes from the shrimp boats that have worked out of its docks for generations.

Boats, nets and early mornings

Brunswick sits on the coast of Georgia, right next to the Golden Isles. Long before sunrise, shrimp boats with their tall outriggers head out through the sound to the open water. They drag their nets through the day and come home in the afternoon, often with a cloud of seagulls following close behind. Watching a shrimp boat come back to the dock is still one of the best sights on the Georgia coast.

The best way to eat them

Fresh Georgia shrimp don't need much. A few favorite ways:

  • Boiled with a little seasoning, then peeled at the table with friends.
  • Lowcountry boil: shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes in one big pot, poured out on newspaper.
  • Fried golden, with a squeeze of lemon and a side of hushpuppies.
  • Shrimp and grits for a Sunday breakfast.

If you're buying them, ask for wild-caught Georgia shrimp and cook them the same day if you can. They're sweet and tender and worth the trip.

Visit the waterfront

Brunswick's old downtown has brick streets, oak-lined squares and a waterfront where you can see the boats tied up. It's an easy stop on the way to St. Simons or Jekyll Island, and a good place to slow down for an afternoon.
