Some Christmas songs are fun. Some are sweet. And then there is "O Holy Night," the one that makes a whole church go quiet. When the soloist reaches that high, soaring part near the end, you can feel the room hold its breath. It has been that way for well over a hundred years.
A poem from a small French town
The carol began in France in 1847. A local parish priest asked a wine merchant and poet named Placide Cappeau to write a Christmas poem. Cappeau read the Gospel of Luke on a trip to Paris and wrote "Minuit, Chrétiens," which means "Midnight, Christians." He asked his friend, the composer Adolphe Adam, to set it to music, and the song was first sung at a Christmas Eve Mass that same year.
Coming to America
A few years later, an American writer and music critic named John Sullivan Dwight translated the song into English. Dwight gave us the English words most of us sing today, about a starry night and the birth of our Savior. His version spread across America's churches and has been part of Christmas ever since.
Why it still moves us
"O Holy Night" doesn't rush. It takes us to the stable, then lifts our eyes to the star. It reminds us that a tired, waiting world needed good news, and it came as a baby born in a manger. That's the heart of Christmas, and it's easy to lose in all the shopping lists and parties.
Simple ways to keep the manger at the center
- Set out the nativity first. Before the lights and the tree, put out the manger scene. Let the children help place Mary, Joseph and the shepherds.
- Read Luke 2 together. On Christmas Eve, read the story out loud before opening a single present. It only takes a few minutes.
- Go to a Christmas Eve service. Candlelight, carols, and "O Holy Night" sung in a quiet church. It's hard to beat.
- Sing it at home. You don't need a great voice. Play the carol and sing along with the family.
- Give with a purpose. Pick one family or one cause to bless this season, in honor of the greatest gift of all.
